The Story Ninjas Services
This document outlines the policies and expectations that apply to all Story Ninjas services, including (but not limited to) coaching, manuscript evaluations, and developmental editing. Our goal is to ensure a clear, respectful, and productive working relationship built on shared understanding.
Nature of Services
All Story Ninjas services are professional, educational, and advisory in nature.
Depending on the service, we may provide written feedback, editorial analysis, coaching, instructional guidance, or strategic recommendations. Unless explicitly stated in a written agreement, Story Ninjas does not write, rewrite, or make changes to a manuscript on an author’s behalf.
Scope of Services
Each service includes only what is described in the specific proposal, invoice, or agreement.
Unless explicitly included, services do not include:
- Publishing platform setup or distribution assistance
- Formatting, cover design, or technical production
- Marketing, advertising, or sales strategy
- Manuscript endorsement, representation, or certification
Requests outside the agreed scope may require an additional service or agreement.
Evaluations vs. Coaching vs. Editing (Clarity Clause)
To avoid misunderstandings, please note:
- Manuscript evaluations provide high-level or detailed analysis and recommendations but do not include ongoing coaching, revision support, or follow-up unless explicitly stated
- Coaching services focus on instruction, feedback, and discussion, and do not include full manuscript review unless contracted
- Developmental editing focuses on structural, narrative, and craft-level guidance and does not include line editing, copyediting, or proofreading unless specified
Each service type is distinct and priced accordingly.
Outcomes and Guarantees
Storytelling is subjective, and outcomes vary based on many factors outside our control.
While our services are designed to support craft improvement and clarity, no guarantees are made regarding:
- Publication or agent representation
- Sales, reviews, or readership growth
- Creative, professional, or commercial success
Implementation of feedback and revision decisions remain the author’s responsibility.
Author Responsibilities
Authors are responsible for:
- Providing complete and accurate materials
- Submitting work according to the agreed process and timeline
- Reviewing feedback and determining how to implement it
- Maintaining copies of all files, feedback, and materials
Delays in submission may result in adjusted timelines.
Communication
Email communication supports clarification of feedback and active assignments.
Brief questions may be answered via email when appropriate. In-depth discussion, additional analysis, or follow-up beyond the agreed scope may require an additional session or service.
We aim to respond to emails within one week, often sooner.
Meetings and Recordings (If Applicable)
For services that include meetings or calls:
All meetings take place via Zoom. Sessions may be recorded at the author’s request for personal reference. Authors are responsible for requesting recordings and for downloading and saving them once shared. Story Ninjas does not retain session recordings long-term.
Scheduling, Cancellations, and No-Shows (If Applicable)
For services that include scheduled sessions:
- Sessions must be canceled at least 24 hours in advance
- Late cancellations and missed sessions are considered delivered and non-refundable
- Required materials must be submitted by stated deadlines to avoid rescheduling
Payments and Refunds
All services are billed per the agreed pricing.
Services and deliverables are non-refundable once delivered. Deposits and completed work are not transferable to other services unless explicitly stated in writing.
Professional Conduct
We are committed to conducting our work professionally, thoughtfully, and in good faith. Our feedback is direct, craft-focused, and centered on reader experience and storytelling effectiveness.
Authors vary widely in how they prefer to receive feedback, and not every feedback style is the right fit for every writer. Differences in communication style, directness, or editorial approach do not constitute a lack of professionalism or care.
We encourage authors to raise questions or concerns about feedback promptly so they can be discussed and clarified. Addressing concerns early allows us to ensure shared understanding and determine whether adjustments or next steps are appropriate.
Discovery calls and early interactions are intended, in part, to help both parties assess fit. Choosing to proceed with services indicates acceptance of our feedback approach and communication style as described in proposals and policies.
